Born August 17, 1962, Thol. Thirumavalavan is a fearless lawyer, electrifying orator, and the most prominent Dalit rights leader in Tamil Nadu — the voice of millions.
Born on 17 August 1962, Thol. Thirumavalavan rose from the Dalit community through a life of resistance, scholarship, and unyielding commitment to social equality. He holds a Master's degree in Criminology, an LLB from Madras Law College, and a Ph.D. from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University — a scholar-activist in the truest sense.
Following the death of Dalit Panthers Iyyakkam founder Dr. K. Krishnaswamy, Thirumavalavan assumed leadership and by 1990 had transformed the movement into the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi — one of Tamil Nadu's most formidable political parties. His oratory, delivered in powerful, poetic Tamil, has moved crowds of thousands and made him the most recognised Dalit rights voice in the state.
Throughout his career, Thirumavalavan has led campaigns against caste atrocities, fought for land rights for Dalits, and demanded proportional representation in government and public employment. He has been a fierce critic of Hindutva nationalism and the RSS, which he sees as modern instruments of caste oppression.
He has served multiple terms as a Member of Parliament representing the Chidambaram constituency. In 2024, his re-election alongside VCK's win in Villupuram earned the party official State Party recognition from the Election Commission of India — a historic milestone. In Parliament, he consistently raises issues of Dalit oppression, manual scavenging, educational rights, and land reform.
